MRI/PET Scans

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans are advanced imaging techniques that are essential tools in the diagnosis and evaluation of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. These non-invasive procedures allow physicians to see inside the brain and identify changes that may be contributing to memory loss or cognitive decline.

MRI scans use powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create highly detailed images of the brain’s structure. This allows our team to assess the size, shape, and condition of various brain regions. In individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, MRI can detect shrinkage or atrophy in areas of the brain associated with memory and thinking, such as the hippocampus and temporal lobes. These structural changes help support a diagnosis and track disease progression over time.

PET scans, on the other hand, provide insight into how the brain is functioning rather than just its structure. PET scans use a small amount of radioactive material to highlight areas of the brain with reduced metabolic activity—patterns commonly seen in Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Specialized PET scans can also detect the presence of amyloid plaques and tau tangles, two hallmark features of Alzheimer’s disease.

At the Memory Doctor Center, we utilize MRI and PET imaging as part of our comprehensive diagnostic approach when needed. These scans help us better understand the underlying causes of cognitive symptoms and provide a clear direction for treatment planning. By combining imaging results with clinical evaluations and cognitive testing, we ensure that each patient receives the most accurate diagnosis and personalized care possible.
